NACCS TEJAS 2013 CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS GUIDELINES

COMMUNITY BASED PEDAGOGIES, SCHOLARSHIP, AND ACTIVISM

Participants in the NACCS Tejas 2013 conference have the opportunity to submit their papers for consideration for the NACCS Tejas Foco 2013 Conference Proceedings in the peer-reviewed Rio Bravo: Journal of Borderlands, published by UTPA. 

The submission deadline is April 1st.
  1. Use Times New Roman, size 12 font.
  2. Double space the entire paper including endnotes and Works Cited.
  3. Use endnotes instead of footnotes.
  4. The page limit is 20 pages but you may also submit the short paper you presented at the conference. Please insert accent marks, especially if you use them in your name.
  5. Use MLA (Modern Languages Association) style for Works Cited and endnotes.
  6. Write: "NACCS Tejas 2013 –Rio Bravo Journal" on the Subject line of your email.
  7. Include a brief (50-75 word) author bio.
  8. If you are submitting poetry, submit no more than 3 poems.
  9. You may submit your paper in Spanish, particularly if you presented it at the conference in Spanish. If you submit in Spanish, please also submit an English translation of the paper.
  10. Save your essay/poetry as a Microsoft Word file as follows: “yourfirst initiallastnameNACCS.doc” for example: SHernandezNACCS.doc. Do not include accent marks.
  11. Center your title followed by your name and affiliation right under it
  12. Left justify the entire paper including subheadings in this fashion:

Call for Proposals 

Recent attacks on Chican@ and Ethnic Studies programs are reminders of the need for spaces to produce knowledge in, about, and for our communities. This conference provides an environment to encounter and engage recent work by those who situate their teaching, research, writing, creative activities, and advocacy on and beyond an academic campus. This call for proposals centers on the ways in which academic research, creative activities, pedagogy, and activism can directly affect and become embedded in these communities.

The conference seeks to bring together scholars, teachers, artists, activists, and other individuals or groups dedicated to Chican@ Studies and Latin@ Studies. With a trans-/extra-disciplinary approach, the 2013 annual conference will represent areas of concern in Chican@, Latin@, Ethnic, Gender, and Critical Race Studies, History, Philosophy, Art, Literature, Theatre and Performance, Music, Social Psychology, Education, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, and other approaches concerned with social justice. Proposals on the methods and outcomes of participatory or action research are particularly encouraged. The program will feature panels on Human Rights, Critical Pedagogies and Epistemologies, Native Issues, Decolonization / Democratization, Gender and LGBTQ Issues, Race and Racialization, Politics, Language, Transnationalism and Immigration. Those with experience as students, teachers, activists, scholars, artists, and other community members are invited to submit the following types of proposals: panels, papers, performances, posters/exhibits, creative activities, testimonios, round tables, film screenings, workshops, and other innovative presentations.

Submit proposals by December 1, 2012 to mas@utpa.edu. In your proposal, include the type of presentation, title, an abstract of 150-250 words, your full contact information, and any audiovisual requests. Los recientes ataques a los programas de Estudios Étnicos y Chican@s son avisos de la
necesidad de tener espacios para producir conocimiento en, sobre y para nuestras comunidades.
Esta conferencia ofrece un espacio de reunión y participación del trabajo actual para las personas
que sitúan su enseñanza, investigación, actividades creativas y esfuerzos más allá del campus
académico. Esta convocatoria se centra en las formas donde la investigación académica, las
actividades creativas, pedagógicas y el activismo pueden incidir directamente e incorporarse en esas
comunidades.

La conferencia intenta reunir a investigadores, profesores, artistas, activistas y otras personas
o grupos dedicados a los estudios chican@s y latin@s. Con un enfoque trans- / extra-disciplinario,
la conferencia anual de 2013 representará áreas de interés que tienen que ver con los estudios
chicano/a, latino/a, étnicos, de género, estudios críticos de raza, historia, filosofía, arte, literatura,
teatro y performance, música psicología social, educación, antropología, sociología, ciencias
políticas, economía y otros enfoques que traten sobre la justica social. Las propuestas sobre los
métodos y resultados de participación o trabajo de investigación son particularmente bienvenidos.

El programa contará con paneles sobre derechos humanos, pedagogías críticas y
epistemologías, aspectos indígenas, descolonización/democratización, aspectos sobre género
y LGBTQ, raza y racialización, política, lenguaje, transnacionalismo e inmigración. Aquellos con
experiencia como estudiantes, maestros, activistas, investigadores, artistas y otros miembros de la
comunidad se les invita a enviar los distintos tipos de propuestas: paneles, trabajos de investigación,
performances, exposición de posters, actividades creativas, testimonios, mesas redondas,
proyecciones de películas, talleres y otras presentaciones innovadoras.

Envío de propuestas a más tardar el 1 de diciembre a mas@utpa.edu. Incluir en su propuesta el
tipo de presentación, el título, un resumen de 150-250 palabras, su información completa de contacto
y cualquier requerimiento audiovisual. Las propuestas y presentaciones pueden ser en español. Para

Taller I: “Storytelling as Community-Based Pedagogies, Scholarship, and Activism”

•Costo del taller: (Gratis para trabajadores administrativos, facultad y estudiantes de UTPA). Para
participantes no afiliados a UTPA, el costo de registro es de $15.00 y deberá pagarse por la fecha
límite.

El líder del taller, el Dr. Francisco Guajardo (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and
Director of the Center for Bilingual Studies, UTPA) facilita el proceso hacia la autoría de testimonios
y de narrativas digitales de los estudiantes y participantes. El Proceso incluye la producción de
narraciones de audio a través de la escritura narrativa y el uso de la tecnología audio digital. Esta
pedagogía particular y el contenido generado por el participante ejemplifican el tipo de trabajo posible
en un contexto de escuela y de comunidad. Los participantes recibirán un certificado acreditando el
desarrollo profesional a través de las horas obtenidas.

Taller II: “Transforming Chicana/o Experiences through Graduate Studies”

•El taller está dirigido para estudiantes graduados y no graduados.

•Costo del taller: (Es gratis para los estudiantes de UTPA). Los estudiantes de otras instituciones
necesitan pagar el registro a la conferencia por la fecha límite que es el 21 de enero.

Los líderes del taller, la Dra. Dolores Delgado Bernal (University of Utah), la Dra. Aída Hurtado
(University of California, Santa Barbara), el Dr. Marcos Pizarro (San José State University) y la
Dra. Sheila Contreras (Michigan State University) serán mentores y motivarán a los estudiantes
interesados en estudios de posgrado de programas de maestría y doctorado. En la sesión de la
mañana, los talleristas discutirán la experiencia educativa de l@s Chican@s y Latin@s, y en la
sesión de la tarde se enfocarán sobre lo que hacen los estudiantes graduados en sus diversos
programas y grados. El taller proporciona a los estudiantes un trato directo con estos líderes
intelectuales que toman decisiones. El taller también puede cubrir el proceso de solicitudes,

•Workshop Fee: (Free for UTPA staff, faculty, and students). For participants not affiliated with UTPA, a $15.00 registration fee is due by the deadline.

Workshop leader Dr. Francisco Guajardo (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Director of the Center for Bilingual Studies, UTPA) facilitates a process to author testimonios and digital narratives with participants and students. Process includes production of audio narratives through written narrative form and the use of digital audio technology. This particular pedagogy and participant-generated content exemplify the type of work possible in a school and community context. Participants receive a certificate showing the Professional Development hours earned.

Workshop II: “Transforming Chicana/o Experiences through Graduate Studies”

•Workshop is for undergraduate and graduate students.

•Workshop Fee: (Free for UTPA students). Students at other institutions need to pay the conference registration fee by the January 21st deadline. 

Workshop leaders Dr. Dolores Delgado Bernal (University of Utah), Dr. Aída Hurtado (University of California, Santa Barbara), Dr. Marcos Pizarro (San José State University), and Dr. Sheila Contreras (Michigan State University) will mentor and encourage students interested in graduate studies with a focus on both M.A. and PhD programs. In the morning session, workshop leaders will discuss the Chican@ and Latin@ educational experience, with an afternoon session focused on what graduate students do in their various programs and with their degrees. The workshop provides students with direct contact with these decision-makers and intellectual leaders. The workshop may also cover the application process, including cover letters, writing samples, and other components of the graduate degree-seeking and professional development process.
